The four basic rules of firearm safety
The four basic rules of firearm safety

What is the best first rifle?

A .22 LR rifle. Ammo is cheap, recoil is tiny and it builds good habits. For a first centerfire, a bolt action in .243, 6.5 Creedmoor or .308 covers most hunting. See Rifle Types.

What caliber should I use for deer?

The .243, 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 and .30-06 are all proven deer rounds. Check your state rules first. See Rifle Calibers and Hunting Rifles.

Do I need a scope?

For hunting and shots past 100 yards, a scope helps a lot. For close-range and defensive use, a red dot or irons work well. See Rifle Optics.

How do I zero my rifle?

Start at 25 yards on a stable rest, adjust until shots hit point of aim, then confirm at 100 yards. Write down the ammo you zeroed with. Step-by-step in Rifle Shooting Basics.
